ASCVD Risk (Pooled Cohort Equations)

Goff DC Jr, Lloyd-Jones DM, Bennett G, et al. 2013 ACC/AHA guideline on the assessment of cardiovascular risk. Published the Pooled Cohort Equations — sex- and race-specific models (Ln age, Ln cholesterol, Ln HDL, Ln systolic BP with treatment status, smoking, diabetes, and interaction terms) estimating 10-year risk of a first hard ASCVD event. Coefficients and the reference patients used for testing are from Appendix 7.

The 2018 AHA/ACC/multisociety cholesterol guideline uses the Pooled Cohort Equations to categorise 40–75-year-olds: < 5% low, 5–< 7.5% borderline, 7.5–< 20% intermediate, ≥ 20% high 10-year risk, with risk-enhancing factors and coronary calcium scoring to refine borderline/intermediate cases. The equations may over- or under-estimate risk in some contemporary and non-US populations.
