Löe H, Silness J. Periodontal disease in pregnancy. I. Prevalence and severity. Described the Gingival Index (GI): each of four gingival areas per tooth is scored 0–3 for inflammation severity, with score 2 or 3 requiring bleeding on gentle probing; the case score is the mean of all sites.

Guideline
Whole-mouth GI is commonly interpreted as 0.1–1.0 mild, 1.1–2.0 moderate, and 2.1–3.0 severe gingival inflammation. The index is reversible and tracks response to plaque control.
